EOS and ASTM International extend the certification program for EOS M 400 Operators

The ASTM International Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence (AM CoE) and Additive Minds – the applied engineering and training group of EOS, a global leader in AM technologies – jointly announced the expansion of the PBF-LB certification program for machine operators to include the EOS M 400/EOS M 400-4 metal additive manufacturing (AM) platform.

The certification program provides a standardized assessment of machine operator competency in the handling of PBF-LB (Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam) metal 3D printers. It is based on the ISO/ASTM 52942:2020 standard and ensures that operators are able to operate the machines reliably and competently. The certification includes both theoretical and practical tests that are specifically tailored to the machine in question.

“ASTM continues its effort to support the industrialization of additive manufacturing by offering programs such as certification. This certification allows operators of sophisticated AM machines to demonstrate expertise and stand out in the industry. The certification will emphasize your organization’s commitment to quality and consistency using PBF-LB processes, and open doors to new production opportunities in the world of additive manufacturing”, said Paul Bates, senior training & certification leader at ASTM International.

The certification evaluates various aspects of the additive manufacturing process, including the Additive Manufacturing Procedure Specification (APS), standardized operating procedures, management and monitoring of the build process, optimization of post-processing and operator maintenance of the systems. Operators can also demonstrate their knowledge of up to two material groups based on PBF-LB processes.

“We are pleased to see the Additive Manufacturing Operator Certification Program continuing to blossom. Coupled with the recent launch of our in-person Additive Minds Academy training center, we are taking substantial steps towards closing the industrial 3D printing educational gap and building a stronger, more robust AM workforce for the future of our industry”, said Fabian Alefeld, senior manager of the Additive Minds Academy and Consulting at EOS.

The expansion of the certification program to the EOS M 400 platform is a significant step in advancing professionalism and competency in additive manufacturing, especially in demanding industrial applications.
