In the world of design and architecture, additive manufacturing with ceramics using 3D printing technology is enabling ever more sophisticated applications. A notable example of this is the “Fusion” project developed by IOUS Studio in collaboration with WASP for the Salone del Mobile in Milan. By using the WASP 40100 Production System, IOUS Studio was able to design and produce an innovative ceramic wall covering.
The “Fusion” project draws its inspiration from the dynamic movements of the sea. The resulting wall elements reflect the fascinating effects of shadows and reflections on the surface of the water, creating a unique design for wall cladding. By dividing the entire surface into smaller modules, it was possible to exhibit parts of the wall as part of the SaloneSatellite. Each of these modules was printed using the WASP 40100 Production System, which enables 24/7 automated production of different ceramic pieces.
With just three of these machines, over 100 pieces can be produced daily, resulting in a total of over 4000 pieces in 40 days. This capacity represents the WASP system as one of the most efficient digital ceramic production systems on the market, which can easily be scaled up to industrial level for the establishment of a digital ceramic factory.
The WASP Residency, launched in 2024, expands opportunities for architects, designers, engineers, artists and researchers by providing access to these advanced 3D printing technologies. The residency aims to advance research into sustainable and technical materials for 3D printing application while increasing the artistic value and cultural contribution of 3D printing technology. Residency participants will have the opportunity to utilize various printing technologies and work directly with the WASP team.
