Mott Corporation has purchased a new 3D printer from Renishaw

To expand its design and manufacturing capabilities for filtration and flow control components, Mott Corporation has acquired another additive manufacturing (AM) machine from Renishaw, a global engineering technology company.

Mott Corporation, based in Connecticut, USA, specializes in solving complex filtration and flow control challenges, particularly for critical applications such as bioreactors, semiconductor manufacturing and aerospace applications. Previously, the company relied on three compression techniques: axial, isostatic and rolling. However, these methods reached their limits for certain geometric requirements, which is why Mott decided to investigate the potential of additive manufacturing (AM).

The choice fell on laser powder bed fusion, an AM process that is particularly well suited to Mott’s requirements. The openness of the machine architecture was of central importance to Mott in order to be able to flexibly adapt parameters in the research and development process. For this reason, the company initially chose Renishaw’s RenAM 400 system, but soon decided to upgrade to the RenAM 500S Flex.

“Renishaw’s philosophy is that process parameters should be as customisable as possible,” said John Laureto, AM Business Manager at Renishaw Inc. “Using the RenAM 500S Flex, Mott Corporation was able to optimise its processes for specific applications and can tweak the parameters as needed for novel projects.”

The RenAM 500S Flex not only offers the proven features of the RenAM 500 series, such as a precise digital optics system and an effective gas flow system, but also the ability to quickly exchange metal powder. This flexibility was a key factor in Mott’s decision, as it allows production parameters to be adapted to specific projects.

“Our ethos is to combine our design, filtration, and flow control expertise with cutting-edge technology to create highly engineered products,” explained Vincent Palumbo, Technical Program Manager at Mott Corporation. “That’s exactly what we’re doing here. The new machine gives us greater confidence in the reliability and performance of our parts, while speeding up development cycles, and better enabling us to bring our designs to life.

The Flex has been the most popular stop on our facility tours. It’s great to see customers’ reactions to the parts we have been able to create. It has also generated useful dialogue between us and our customers to come up with development projects and think of other components we can design with them in the future.”

The decision to use the RenAM 500S Flex has not only made Mott Corporation’s production processes more efficient, but has also opened up new opportunities for collaboration with customers by jointly developing innovative projects and applications.
