As part of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2024, Italian landscape designer Giulio Giorgi has collaborated with WASP to create a sensory ceramic garden. This project, realized in cooperation with World Child Cancer UK, provides a retreat for children undergoing cancer treatment and their families.
The World Child Cancer’s Nurthering Garden was designed as an oasis that supports the emotional wellbeing of patients. Funded by Project Giving Back, this garden is designed to help children connect with nature during their hospital stays.
“What is a sensory garden? It’s a garden that lets children live in the moment and connect with nature while being treated at the hospital. Touching, smelling, tasting… those sensory experiences let them forget for a little while the hard time they’re living through”, says Giulio Giorgi describing the idea behind the project.
The challenge was to develop a garden concept that could be easily replicated and adapted to different environments. Together with Professor Giuseppe Fallacara from the Polytechnic University of Bari, Giorgi designed a stackable ceramic module that allows for complete customization and easy relocation of the garden.
The modules were manufactured by WASP with its Clay 3D Printing Farm. Over 600 modules were produced in less than two months. This was made possible by the WASP 40100 Production System, an automated system for customized series production that can print around the clock. This enabled a large number of ceramic products with individual designs to be created efficiently.
This project impressively demonstrates how 3D printing technologies can be used in the landscaping and healthcare sectors to provide customized solutions. The combination of creative design and advanced manufacturing technology has made it possible to create a garden that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also provides real added value for the children involved and their families.
