SINTX Technologies, a manufacturer and developer of advanced ceramic materials, announced that its Technology Assessment & Transfer subsidiary has entered into a cooperative research and development agreement with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory (DEVCOM ARL). This partnership is designed to leverage the strengths of both organizations in the areas of ceramic 3D printing and ceramic matrix composites (CMC).
The U.S. Army DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory, as the Army’s only basic research facility, focuses on scientific discovery, technological innovation and the transition of technologies to shape the future direction of the Army. SINTX’s facility in Millersville, Maryland, has been involved in ceramic 3D printing since the mid-1990s and was able to print its first component in 1998. Today, SINTX offers prototyping and low-volume manufacturing services in ceramic 3D printing, sells ceramic-filled resins for customers to use in their own printing processes, and develops printing solutions for new materials in collaboration with multiple customers.
In addition to ceramic 3D printing, the Maryland site is also developing ultra-high temperature resistant CMCs and expanding extensive capabilities in the densification of fiber-based preforms through chemical vapor infiltration and polymer infiltration followed by pyrolysis. The increasing market demand for these materials, for example for hypersonic vehicle applications, is seen by SINTX as an opportunity for future growth.
Ann Kutsch, General Manager of the Maryland site, commented: “We have a highly skilled team of engineers and technicians here in Maryland, all of whom are instrumental in pushing this cutting-edge work forward. I look forward to optimizing our offerings in these markets while also working with DEVCOM ARL to build both teams’ knowledge and capabilities in advanced technologies.”
This collaboration underscores the commitment of both organizations to push the boundaries of materials science and additive manufacturing and makes an important contribution to the development of advanced technologies for military and civilian applications.
