The British start-up Construct3D presented a modular filament changing system for 3D printers at the Sanjay Mortimer RepRap Festival. Unlike other systems of this type, such as AMS from Bambu Lab, Construct3D Filament Changer is open source.
The filament changer has replaceable filament modules that can be removed from a frame with two screws. This should significantly simplify maintenance in the event of filament breakage. The modules are also equipped with integrated filament dryers and special backwinding motors for automatic filament tracking.
According to Jacob Lord from Construct3D, the system is designed so that it can be installed as an attachment on almost any standard 3D printer on the market. This means that the filament changing system could become a universal standard upgrade, according to the developer. Only a free control output on the printer is required for control.
Although the system is still under development, Jacob Lord wants to make the functionality and construction plans available to the community free of charge via a Creative Commons license.
