The Czech company Prusa Research, known for its 3D printers, has launched the sale of 3D models via its 3D model platform Printables. The platform, called “Printables Store”, is intended to enable designers and manufacturers to offer their designs for a fee.
According to Prusa Research, most of Printables’ functions will remain free of charge. The new platform is merely intended as an additional source of income for designers. It enables them to pursue their work full-time.
In the Printables Store, models must cost at least 5 US dollars. According to the company, this is to prevent spam uploads. Prusa Research also receives 20 percent of the sales price as a fee. Buyers can pay for the models by credit card or Apple Pay.
According to Prusa Research, the platform is primarily aimed at advanced users. The Printables Store will contain models that are particularly detailed or complex to model. This sets it apart from free entry-level models.
