Innovative approach to filament drying: activated aluminum oxide instead of silica gel

The maker “Build It Make It” has presented an interesting approach to drying filament. While silica gel bags are normally included with filaments, his concept is based on the use of activated aluminum oxide.

The idea was born out of dissatisfaction with silica gel, which is inexpensive but often cumbersome to handle. The new drying cylinder consists of an aluminum tube that is filled with activated aluminum oxide and sealed at both ends. High-temperature-resistant epoxy resin and aluminum mesh are used for the construction.

Hygroscopic materials such as nylon or PETG in particular benefit from dry storage, while the effect is less pronounced with other filaments such as PLA. The self-built drying cylinder with activated aluminum oxide is an interesting alternative to conventional drying methods. It combines durability with ease of use and could be a practical solution for many 3D printing users.
