German Start-Up teases Silicone prosthesis out of 3D Printers

Reproducible, more easily and quickly – Start-Up from Dresden/Germany revolutionized manufacturing processes. Milestone in the production of hand and foot prosthetics: stamos + braun prothesenwerk gmbh is the worldwide first company who is able to print heat cured high consistency biomedical grade silicone rubbers with a 3D-printer.

The German company uses the silicone to produce complex and customized silicone parts for finger-, hand-, partial hand-, toe- and foot prosthetics. With remarkable results. The silicone specialist Alex Stamos explains the advantages compared to the conventional process: „The prosthesis are easy to reproduce and can weight up to 40% less“. His Co founder Christoph Braun said: „In the same time we save a lot of material because of the new technology. The reason for this is that we create a digital model of the prosthesis and we only print the necessary silicone we need“

Right now Stamos and Braun are working on a solution to print the prosthesis in full color. „This is a special challenge because we try to come as close as possible to the original colors of the patient“ said the experts. Although there are already companies who deal with 3D-printing of silicone. However there is no company on the market who is able to print this tough, high viscous and heat cured high consistency biomedical grade silicone rubber tells the company. Stamos and braun prothesenwerk gmbh are in cooperation with the Technische Universität Dresden (Institute of Electromechanical and Electronic Design) in a joint project and supported by the program „Europe promotes Saxony“.
