Rat Rig V-CHONK: New open-source 3D printer kit

The V-CHONK, an open-source project from Rat Rig, is aimed at 3D printing enthusiasts who want to build a compact CoreXY desktop printer themselves. The kit, which will start shipping in the second half of August, combines a space-saving design with a high proportion of printable parts and standard hardware.

With a build space of 180x180x180mm, the V-CHONK is aimed at users looking for a small but powerful 3D printer. The project is based on a modular concept. Users can configure the electronics according to their own ideas or choose a pre-configured bundle.

Technically, the V-CHONK relies on a linear rail system with MGN12C rails for all three axes. This promises precise movements and high print quality. The lightweight print head and the sophisticated gantry design should enable fast printing speeds.

A special feature is the compact electronics area with integrated cable management. This contributes to the tidy appearance and easy maintenance. The kit includes the frame, hardware for the kinematics, the print bed and a heating mat. Cables are not included and must be purchased separately.

Interested parties should note that the printed parts are not included in the kit. Rat Rig provides all documentation, including CAD model, parts list and STL files, free of charge under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. This allows the community to further develop and customize the design.
