Japanese company Asahi Kasei will be presenting its latest material solutions at Fakuma 2024, including innovative materials for 3D printing and sustainable recycling technologies. The focus is on developments that meet both technical and ecological requirements. Particularly noteworthy is the new CNF/polyamide composite material, which consists of bio-based cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and was specially developed for 3D printing applications.
CNF is obtained from cotton linter, a waste product of cotton processing. It is characterized by high heat resistance and mechanical stability, which makes it a suitable material for use in demanding printing processes. The CNF/polyamide compound combines these fibers with polyamide, resulting in improved dimensional accuracy and surface quality of the printed objects. This makes the material interesting for the production of precise components in various industrial sectors, including the automotive and electronics industries.
In addition to advances in 3D printing, Asahi Kasei is also presenting new recycling technologies. In collaboration with Microwave Chemical, the company has developed a chemical recycling process for PA66 (polyamide 66). By using microwaves, the starting monomers of the plastic can be recovered with low energy consumption and high yields. This process contributes to the circular economy, as the extracted monomers can be used for the production of new PA66.
In parallel, Asahi Kasei is developing a solvent-based recycling process specifically optimized for process waste and post-consumer materials such as airbags. These technologies aim to reduce the environmental impact and increase resource efficiency in plastics production.
With these material innovations and recycling solutions, Asahi Kasei is focusing on a combination of technical excellence and sustainable business practices. The developments presented show how modern manufacturing techniques, such as 3D printing, and environmentally friendly processes can be combined to create forward-looking solutions for the industry.
